AC Won't Turn Off: Why It Runs Nonstop and How to Fix It

A properly working air conditioner runs in cycles of about 15 to 20 minutes, two or three times an hour, and shuts off once the thermostat reaches its target. An AC that runs nonstop has stopped responding to that off signal, and the cause is almost always one of two things: the fan is set to run continuously, or the contactor that powers the outdoor unit has welded itself shut. Telling those two apart takes just a few seconds and decides whether this is a free fix or a service call.

The distinction matters because a compressor that never stops is under stress it was not built for, and along the coast the problem shows up more than most homeowners expect. Salt air corrodes and pits the electrical contacts inside the outdoor unit, and pitted contacts are exactly what fuse together and keep the system running. Left alone, a unit that cannot shut off wears out the most expensive part in the system while quietly running up the power bill around the clock.

First, Check Whether It Is Just the Fan

The quickest thing to rule out is the thermostat fan setting. When the fan is set to on rather than auto, the indoor blower runs continuously and pushes air through the vents even after the cooling has cycled off, which makes the system seem like it never stops. Switching the fan from on to auto lets the blower run only during a cooling cycle, which is how it should normally sit.

If air is still coming from the indoor vents but the outdoor unit is quiet, it is only the fan, and the auto setting fixes it. If the outdoor unit itself keeps running with the thermostat off, the problem is electrical and more urgent.

A Contactor Welded Shut

The contactor is the switch inside the outdoor condenser that sends power to the compressor and fan when the thermostat calls for cooling, then cuts that power when cooling stops. Every time it closes, it draws a small electrical arc, and over years that arcing pits and corrodes the contacts. Eventually they can fuse in the closed position, and once welded shut the contactor keeps feeding power to the compressor no matter what the thermostat says. The outdoor unit runs continuously, sometimes with a buzzing or humming from the condenser.

Coastal air speeds this up. Salt corrosion accelerates the pitting that leads to a welded contactor, which is one reason the same electrical wear that shows up in other AC electrical problems tends to arrive earlier on South Bay systems. A contactor is an inexpensive part, but it sits in a high-voltage panel and can weld again almost immediately if the contacts are pried apart, so replacement belongs to a technician rather than a screwdriver.

Thermostat and Wiring Faults

When the fan is on auto and the contactor is fine, the problem is often in the signal itself. A thermostat that has aged past its accuracy, gathered dust on its sensor, or lost calibration can misread the room and keep calling for cooling that is not needed. Damaged or shorted low-voltage wiring does the same thing from the other direction: two exposed wires touching send a constant cooling signal to the outdoor unit, so it never receives the command to stop. A failing control board can also override the normal cycle.

These faults trace back to the same signal path behind a thermostat that is not working right, and diagnosing which link in the chain has failed takes a meter and some electrical knowledge rather than guesswork.

An Undersized or Struggling System on a Hot Day

Sometimes the AC is running long because it cannot catch up. On the hottest afternoons a system that is undersized for the home, low on refrigerant, or fighting a dirty coil will run far longer than normal simply trying to reach the setpoint. This is different from a unit that will not shut off at all, since it does eventually cycle when the house cools at night, but it feels like constant running during peak heat. If the system runs nonstop and never quite cools, the cause overlaps with the reasons an AC struggles to cool the house, and it is worth ruling out before assuming an electrical fault.

A compressor is built to cycle, and one that runs continuously carries heat and mechanical load it was not designed to sustain, which shortens its life. At the same time, an AC running around the clock in coastal summer heat draws power every hour it should have been off, so the cost adds up quickly. If the outdoor unit will not stop and switching the fan to auto changes nothing, shutting the system off at the breaker protects the compressor while a technician diagnoses the contactor or wiring.
